John Lennon will probably always be best remembered for his music and lyric writing skills
and his participation in The Beatles. But, while he enjoyed music, he loved literature and art
and studied at the Liverpool Art Institute from 1957 through 1960. Additionally, he was the
author and illustrator of three books, "In His Own Write," 'A Spaniard in the Works" and
"Skywriting by Word of Mouth."
While his music career occupied much of his time, in 1968 he began drawing again,
using his favorite mediums, pen and ink. Lennon said of his artwork, "If art were to redeem
man, it could do so only by saving him from the seriousness of life and restoring him to an
unexpected boyishness."
In 1969, he married Yoko Ono and, as a wedding gift, drew for her a chronicle of their
wedding ceremony, honeymoon, and their plea for world peace, the Bed-In. This series of
drawings became known as the Bag One Series.
First published and put on display in the London Art Gallery in 1970, the Bag One
Series Exhibit closed on its second day when Scotland Yard officials confiscated the "erotic"
art.
Yoko Ono Lennon was committed to sharing Lennon's work with the world and, in
1986, began publishing the Bag One images in a series of prints. These prints are a
commentary on the daily life of Lennon, Yoko and their son, Sean.
The Bag One Portfolio is on permanent display at The Museum of Modern Art in New
York City, but has traveled to major museums and galleries throughout the Europe, Japan
and the United States.
Lennon died tragically in New York City on December 8, 1980.
